Vadodara: The body of an elderly man who died on Wednesday early morning could be brought out of the flood waters only in the evening, after his family and an activist made several calls to the rescue teams. Ashok Sharma (65), who had a breathing ailment and other health problems, died at his residence in Shankarrao Pathakni Chaali near Dinesh Mill in Akota at 4am. His family members approached an activist, Swejal Vyas, for help after trying other options.

Vyas said that the family contacted him in the early morning. “Since then, I have been trying to ensure someone helps them. I even went to the circuit house where a meeting of top officials was taking place and sought help,” he said.

The deceased’s son, Pavan Sharma, said that he had been seeking help soon after his after died at 4am. “I stay in Atladara, and my family of seven persons, with the body of my father, was marooned in Akota,’’ said Pavan.

Vyas said that the body was brought out of the waterlogged area around 6.30pm for cremation. He said that the rescue and relief operations of the civic body have not been sufficient.
