A 26-year-old man who was shot in the neck by police last week has died last week after he attempted to run over officers in a Labor MP's stolen car. The shooting occurred about midday on Friday in Wentworthville after the 26-year-old and a 34-year-old passenger allegedly stole the luxury car of NSW Labor MP Karen McKeown, whose residence was about 30 kilometres away in Leonay. On Friday, police attended an underground residential carpark on Lane Street and found the stolen vehicle was driving towards them.
No officers were injured during the incident. The officers shot at the car and hit the two men inside. In a police statement, the officers “immediately” rendered first aid to them who were then treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
South West Metropolitan Region Commander Acting Assistant Commissioner said at a press conference on Friday afternoon the “critical incident” occurred when the 26-year-old “accelerated” towards the officers. “As a result, police drew their firearms and were required to fire a number of shots,” Mr Dunstan told reporters. “A male received gunshot wounds to the neck area and a second while in the passenger seat received gunshot wounds to the leg, thigh area.
” Three of the five officers reportedly discharged their weapons. The car had been allegedly taken during an aggravated break and enter on Friday after the keys were stolen from the owner’s residence. The vehicle was equipped with an in-vehicle tracker, which directed police.
