Thiruvananthapuram : Attingal police arrested a 40-year-old man on Wednesday for murdering his mother-in-law using a hammer at Karichiyil on Tuesday night. Preetha, 58, wife of Babu Raveendran, 58, of Thenguvilakam Veedu at Karichiyil near Attingal, died after being hit on the head several times with the hammer. The accused trespassed into the house through the back door and the victim was sleeping in her room when the attack took place.

Her husband, who rushed to the room upon hearing her scream, was also injured while trying to rescue her. Meanwhile, locals reached the spot sensing some danger, but the accused escaped upon seeing them. They were admitted to a private hospital in city, but the woman’s life could not be saved.



Anil, 40, of Mangalathu Veedu at Kurakanni near Varkala, was arrested and has been remanded after being produced before a court on charges under BNS Sections 103 for murder , 309(1) for attempt to murder, 332(b) for house-trespass in order to commit an offence, and 296(b) for abusing. Police said Preetha’s daughter, Bindya, was married to the accused a few years ago, and they were not on good terms. A few months ago, Bindya filed a divorce case, and notice was affixed to his property by a court attaching his property.
