Vadodara: A man, who allegedly duped people using forged govt documents , has been arrested by Detection of Crime Branch ( DCB ). The accused, Nilesh Desai , was nabbed from Karjan based on a tip-off. Police said Desai had been on the run for a year and a half after offences were registered against him in Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
Desai was first booked by Kosamba police in Surat, where he allegedly duped the father of a man booked for rape and under the Pocso Act. He posed as a lawyer and met the father of the accused in 2022. He promised to file a criminal miscellaneous application in the Gujarat high court regarding the accused’s case and took over Rs 15.
47 lakh from the victim. Desai then made a bogus document showing that the application had been filed and sent it to the accused’s father. Another case of cheating was filed against Desai at Harni police station in Vadodara after he cheated several people by promising them houses built by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) under a govt scheme.
He took over Rs 4.55 lakh from the victims towards deposit money. Desai then made bogus property ownership documents and forged the signature of the deputy collector to convince the victims that they had been allotted the houses.
He disappeared in 2023 after taking their money. Police said that Desai and his accomplices have duped many people in the past. The accused has over 11 offences of cheating registered against him in Vadodara, Surat and Panchmahal.
