Pune: Unemployment rate of the labour workforce in India has decreased from 3.3% in 2022-23 to 3.2% in 2023-24 for men, the latest report of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) has revealed.
However, for the women workforce, the rate increased in the same period from 2.9% to 3.2% The survey was conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Union Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation ( MoSPI ).
About 4 lakh people from over 1 lakh households over the age of 15 years in urban and rural areas of the country were studied for the survey. The results were declared on Thursday during the Data User Conference at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. The report also revealed that the overall labour force participation rate in the past five years has seen a steady rise.
Till date, seven annual reports covering both rural and urban areas have been released. The reports provide estimates of key parameters related to employment and unemployment. Saurabh Garg, secretary of MoSPI, said, "The PLFS provides continuous labour market data, replacing the earlier Quinquennial surveys.
It offers key insights into rural and urban employment, disaggregated by gender and age, helping policymakers design and assess labour policies, social security measures, and reforms." He added, "The survey also tracks trends in workforce participation, educational attainment, and skill levels. This provides a comprehensive view of the labour dynamics.
