Pune: Maharashtra registered a total of 9.5 crore voters in the final electoral roll published on Friday. The draft roll published on Aug 6 had 9.

36 crore voters. The increase in numbers was spurred by registration of a large number of women voters . Around 10 lakh women voters registered in the state between publication of draft roll on Aug 6 and final publication on Aug 30, as per the data released by state election officials.



The state recorded a total increase of 16.98 lakh voters in the final electoral roll after the special summary revision drive carried out ahead of the assembly elections. “Registration of women voters saw an increase by 10 lakh as against 6.

8 lakh male voters during this period,” an election official said. State additional chief electoral officer Dr Kiran Kulkarni told TOI that a rise of 16.98 lakh voters was seen in the final electoral roll from Aug 6 draft roll till the final roll published on Aug 30.

“We have had an increase in registration of women voters. Also, there has been a considerable increase in registration of youth voters , too. Voters can continue to register their names till ten days before the last date of nomination for assembly elections, so the registrations are bound to rise,” he said.

A significant increase in registration of youth voters was also observed in the state among 18-19 and 20-29 age groups, with about 3.67 lakh rise in the former age group, and 7.55 lakh in the latter.

However, in the final tally, the total number of male voters outnumbers female voters in the state. The number of male voters is 4.9 crore as compared to 4.

6 crore women voters. The male-female ratio currently is 925:933, election officials said. The ECI has been stressing on focussed registration in states going in for assembly polls and similar drives were carried out in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Jharkhand.

The electoral roll revision programme enabled eligible new voters to register themselves, while existing voters got an opportunity to make changes, corrections, and update their details on the electoral roll till Aug 20. Many voters had complained about their names missing from the voter list and not being able to find their polling booths during the Lok Sabha polls. These voters were urged to re-register and check their names ahead of the assembly polls.
