NEW DELHI: Congress Party on Saturday took disciplinary action against Jayashree Patil by expelling her for six years for contesting as an independent candidate against the party’s official nominee in the Sangli constituency in Maharashtra. The party issued an official statement noting that, "In the 2024 Maharashtra State General Assembly elections, while the official candidate of the Congress party is contesting in the 282 Sangli Assembly constituency, Patil contested as an independent candidate." This act violates party discipline, and under the directives of the State President, Nana Patole, Jayashree has been suspended for the next six years, the statement added.

Earlier last week on Thursday, Maharashtra Congress suspended eight rebel members for a duration of six years due to their decision to contest elections independently including Jayashree Patil. The expelled leaders include Rajendra Mulak from Ramtek, Kamal Vyavhare from Kasba Peth, Purshottam Hazare from Nagpur East, Aba Bagul from Parvati, Shamkant Saner from Sindkheda, Manish Anand from Shivaji Nagar (Pune), and Amol Deshmukh from Savner..
