Former Warren Central star Trey Hall rushed for 95 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries, and Landon Varnes threw for three TDs as the Bulldogs blitzed Hinds Community College 56-14 on Thursday. Gulf Coast (8-1, 5-1 MACCC South ) earned a share of the South Division championship for the sixth consecutive season.
East Central and Gulf Coast tied with a 5-1 division record, but East Central won their head-to-head meeting and the tiebreaker that goes with it. Hinds finished its season with a 2-7 overall record, and 2-5 in the South Division. Hinds held the ball for 41 minutes Thursday, but Gulf Coast used a steady stream of big plays to turn the game into a blowout.
Gulf Coast had scoring plays of 76, 63, 44 and 21 yards, with six scoring drives taking less than three minutes. The Bulldogs also got a 64-yard kickoff return by Brandon Hines to set up Hall’s 21-yard touchdown, which was the start of a run of 49 unanswered points. Shadrick Toodle had a 34-yard fumble return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to put Gulf Coast ahead 20-14.
“The one thing that stands out were the big plays in the first half,” Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. “There were some long passes, long runs, some chunk plays that wound up in the end zone. That was the difference in the score.
