Lyle Gene Wertz, 77 September 22, 1946 - August 22, 2024 ELIZABETH, Colo. — Lyle Gene Wertz, 77, of Elizabeth, Colorado, formerly of Grand Island, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado. He was born on September 22, 1946, in Sterling, Colorado, to Kenneth and June (Hulse) Wertz.

Lyle was a 1964 graduate of Grand Island Senior High in Grand Island, Nebraska. He married Gloria Rowe on October 9, 1971, in Grand Island, where they met while in high school. Lyle managed the Farmers Union Co-op in Grand Island and then worked his way up to management in the shipping and receiving department at Anheuser Busch in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Lyle had a deep love for the outdoors and rarely missed an opportunity to explore Colorado’s scenic beauty. Whether fishing the Poudre River and other local streams and reservoirs, or hunting elk and deer in Cherokee Park, Lyle found respite and relaxation in the outdoors. He was an avid traveler crisscrossing Europe while in the U.

S. Army, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He visited all 50 states, visiting with family and friends (or to see his favorite band, Little Big Town).

He loved seeing new places. His humor, generosity, stoic insight and kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and June; and his brothers, Kendell and Rodney.

He is survived by his son, Cody, daughter-in-law, Mary Ann, and granddaughter, Catherine (Cass); his sisters, Pat Daley, Judy Puckett, Barb Hobbs and Brenda (Mike) Cummings; and his brother, Rich. In lieu of flowers, Lyle’s family requests people get outside, explore the outdoors and enjoy Colorado’s and the nation’s wildlife and scenery. Donations may also be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
