Two luxe Australian hotels have taken out spots in the world’s best hotels for 2024 – beating out luxury competitors in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Bangkok and London. The World’s 50 Best Hotels list — pulled together with an expert panel of journalists, travellers and educators by The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy — has officially revealed Australia’s best hotel. The Calile Hotel in Brisbane took out 25th on the overall ladder while holding its place as the best hotel in the country.

While it did drop down from last year’s 12th place ranking, the hotel managed to beat America’s best hotel, with The Carlyle in New York slotting in at 30th. The Calile offers a range of luxury rooms with both city and poolside views, with the 30-metre pull being a major draw card of the hotel. Other rooms flaunt indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as separate living areas and a range of suites to match the hotel’s Palm Springs vibe.

The hotel also includes a spa, gym, cabanas, a pool deck, and a library for guests to enjoy. “There’s more to this place than the poolside vibe. My wandering takes in an amphitheatre, a grand room, cosy rooms for private dining and the library – a perfect place to linger, work or to just exhale.

A place where stories can pause, or pivot,” the hotel’s website states. Hobart’s The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, also came in at 49th on the list. The hotel has 152 rooms and suites, with its “rich architectural history” spanning back to the 1840s, according to the website.

“Heritage rooms and suites showcase original Georgian details including vaulted doors and restored fireplaces in some rooms; Art Deco rooms offer understated luxury with a rich colour palette and elegant materials; and modern Pavilion rooms and suites frame waterfront views with floor-to-ceiling windows,” the website states. The amenities and beverage options highlight local products and collaborations, including with Lark Distillery and Moo Brew. The Capella in Bangkok took out first place in the list, followed by Passalacqua in Lake Como in Italy, Rosewood in Hong Kong, Cheval Blanc in Paris and The Upper House in Hong Kong.
