5-Reminisce on the olden days Winston-Salem has a leg-up on Colonial Williamsburg: instead of one historically restored town, the twin city boasts two! Downtown lies the famous Old Salem, a former Moravian settlement that has been preserved and restored throughout the years, since it was settled in 1766. The whole site is a National Historic Landmark, with the Single Brothers House and Tavern each having their landmark certification. (George Washington even stayed at the Old Salem Tavern for two nights in 1791.

) While no founding fathers stayed at there, the Historic Bethabara Park was founded in 1753 by Moravians who settled there after walking from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In Old Salem, a new coffee shop and taproom, Lot 63, recently opened, showcasing traditional Moravian desserts paired with coffee and local brews. Coffee enjoyers can sit by a beautiful stained glass window, or gaze off into the historically recreated street and cobblestone while enjoying a sugar cake or Moravian cookie.

In the summer, Bethabara's many trails and medicine garden are both in bloom, making a delightful stroll through the property a must-do. Both towns are a beautiful representation of Winston-Salem’s rich, well-preserved history. People process past Home Moravian Church during the 252nd Easter Sunrise Service of the Moravian Church on Sunday, Mar.
