COLUMBIA — One of the oldest surviving buildings in the BullStreet District , a burgeoning redevelopment project years in the making, is set to become a wedding and event venue. The sprawling 15,700-square-foot space, named The Laundry, will be split between event space and open retail space for things like restaurants and businesses. The two main event spaces include a bridal suite, space for a ceremony or dinner and a large outdoor space with views of the Babcock building.

The Babcock building that once housed mentally ill patients sat empty for more than two decades before a massive fire destroyed much of it, including the iconic dome, in 2020. Three years later, the cupola was replaced. The Laundry building, which was used as a service building for the mental asylum that once sat on the BullStreet grounds , dates all the way back to 1883.

MUV Fitness gyms in Columbia bought out by new company, set to be renovated "This adaptive reuse project not only preserves the rich history of the Laundry Building but also creates an exciting space for events and future retail and commercial opportunities," said Robert Hughes, who leads the Greenville-based development company behind the BullStreet District. The Laundry space, located at 2046 Talley St., is being renovated by South Carolina-based Avant Holdings.

The event venue, which will be available for weddings and other events beginning in December, is another addition in a laundry list of developments for the retail district. F.
