Longlegs —a critical and box-office hit that recently claimed the title “highest-grossing indie movie of 2024′′—is ready to come home. Did you have “lingering nightmares” on your list of weekend plans? Because a serial killer is about to peek through your window and crash your birthday party. Starting August 23, the film arrives on digital for rental and purchase; a physical release is coming September 24.

Though it’ll be hard to wait any longer if you didn’t catch Longlegs in the theater, the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD option might be your best bet; according to Neon it comes with bonus materials that include “on-set interviews with cast and crew and feature-length commentary with writer-director Osgood Perkins.” io9 got a chance to talk to Perkins when Longlegs hit theaters, and he’s a thoughtful, insightful creator (on top of being the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins, and a sometimes actor himself who’s appeared in Nope , Legally Blonde , and more). His commentary will no doubt be a fascinating listen.

While Longlegs is a movie best experienced without knowing too much about what to expect, even casual pop culture followers will know it stars Nicolas Cage as a distinctively disturbing murderer. Maika Monroe (It Follows) plays a young FBI agent whose intuitive abilities make her uniquely suited to pursue him—a talent noted by her boss, played by Blair Underwood. Longlegs ‘ narrative starts off as a recognizable homage to familiar crime thrillers, especially Silence of the Lambs , but then spirals down a different path, drawing on carefully crafted production design that infuses eerie dread into its mundane, grey world.

“When I sat down to write the movie, the question in my mind was: what’s the invitation to the audience that I can make early on that sort of gets people in the roller coaster car? What gains them admission to the world? What’s the tip of the spear?,” Perkins told io9. “For me, Silence of the Lambs had been such a hugely impactful movie—it came out when I was 15 or 16-ish [when] I really started getting interested in movies, and all of a sudden you’re handed this immaculate thing. I don’t think any of us who are that age and are filmmakers will forget the effect of the perfection of that movie, just like, ‘Wow, they really just nailed it.

This is so satisfying on so many levels.’ I just cheated. I just used it as a crib, as a way to soften or tenderize the audience, to say, ‘You know, it’s this ! You remember this.

’ And then, of course, take a pretty hard left turn to make it not that at all.” Longlegs arrives on digital and on demand August 23; 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD arrive September 24..
