London City Airport (LCY), a compact airport situated just east of the city, is set to expand its capacity, enhancing connectivity to numerous European destinations. The Department for Transport has approved the airport’s plans to increase its annual passenger limit from 6.

5 million to 9 million. Additionally, LCY will be able to introduce three more early morning weekday flights. Despite its modest size, featuring only 15 gates across two wings, London City Airport served 3.

4 million passengers last year. This figure is a mere fraction compared to the 79 million passengers that passed through London’s major international hub, Heathrow Airport (LHR), during the same period. Favored for its convenient location near central London, LCY has been steadily recovering its passenger numbers post-pandemic, although it has yet to return to its pre-pandemic peak of 5.

1 million passengers in 2019. The airport offers flights to over two dozen destinations within the UK and Europe, served by prominent airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM. While the airport’s expansion will boost its passenger capacity, its operating hours will remain unchanged.

Currently, London City Airport operates from 4:45 am to 10 pm on weekdays, from 10:45 am to 10 pm on Sundays, and from 4:45 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. London is served by six major airports, including Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), Luton (LTN), Stansted (STN), and Southend (SEN)..
