Leah Muir will have more than 40cm of her cut to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support Get the latest top news stories sent straight to your inbox with our daily newsletter We have more newsletters Get the latest top news stories sent straight to your inbox with our daily newsletter We have more newsletters Lockerbie teenager Leah Muir will fulfil a promise to her dying nana when she gets all of her lengthy locks shaved off tomorrow. The 16-year old set out to sacrifice all of her more than 40cm of lovely long hair to raise £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The gesture was made as a thank you to the specialist nurses who helped care for her beloved nana, Caroline Muir, who died a year ago after losing her battle to the disease.

However, thanks to online donations and collection tubs dotted around the town’s businesses Leah has already raised £420. And that’s before she even sits down at 11am tomorrow to go under the clippers at the Who’s Next Barber Shop. She said: “I’m doing this fundraiser to help people with cancer who might not have a chance to get their hair back.

” And the brave young woman, who has a passion for photography, will no doubt be contemplating on the latest cancer scare to hit her close family. Her 39-year-old dad, Shaun Muir, had his own cancer battle nine years ago which needed an operation and chemotherapy. But the family has just learned there is a possibility it has returned.

Shaun will attend Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary to discover if that is the case. It makes Leah’s Brave The Shave for Macmillan all the more remarkable and poignant. Her mum, Margaret, said: “We are so incredibly proud of Leah and what she is going to do tomorrow.

“It has come at a difficult time for us while we wait to see what is going on with Shaun but Leah’s bravery has given us a lift. “She’s a quiet girl so this is massive for her. But she was very close to her nana and, before she died, Leah told her that she would fundraise to thank the Macmillan nurses who helped her.

Leah has sorted this whole fundraising herself and it surprised us because she has never even had short hair before – let alone have it all shaved off. It is a really big thing she is doing because her hair is beautiful but this is such a great cause. “She told us that she had a choice and hers will grow back, but people who have cancer don’t get that choice.

“It shows just how loving and caring Leah is. Our family has been dogged with cancer for generations. We have lost so many close family members to it.

” Margaret added: “We are grateful to everyone who has donated and Leah would really love the support and any more donations as everything helps the fantastic work Macmillan nurses do. “There are collection tubs in businesses around Lockerbie and Gary has one in his barber’s shop if anyone wants to come along to drop in a donation or cheer Leah on.” Donations can also be made at https://bravetheshave.
