Liverpool have been given a big injury boost after Alexis Mac Allister returned to training for Argentina after picking up a problem during the country's 3-0 win over Chile. The midfielder started for the 2022 World Cup winners alongside Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandez and scored the opening goal of the game but was subbed off for Paulo Dybala with around ten minutes to go after suffering from "discomfort". The Reds were given a scare by the news , with Mac Allister key to giving Arne Slot 's Liverpool a perfect start to the new season - but Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has eased their fears after confirming the 25-year-old has recovered and is available for their next game against Colombia on Tuesday.

"The team is fine, recovering from the game the other day, with some typical ailments," he told the press. "Nico (Gonzalez) trained separately and Alexis (Mac Allister) with the rest of the group. We will see how they have evolved over the last two days to decide how we are going to play.

" Liverpool's next game is a home clash against Nottingham Forest on September 14 and there had been concerns that Mac Allister would be racing to get fit for that game, but the player appears to have come through the Chile game relatively unscathed. The former Brighton star could pick up his 33rd cap in their World Cup qualifier against Colombia as he continues to go from strength to strength with his country. Mac Allister netted the first goal of the game as he finished off a superb team move - rifling home after Atletico Madrid foward Julian Alvarez threaded a beautiful ball across the face of goal.

He has played every minute of Liverpool's season so far, forming an excellent midfield partnership with Ryan Gravenberch - with the pair key in setting the tempo for the team's dangerous attacks. Liverpool's only other injury concerns in the squad are Curtis Jones, who picked up a minor issue before the club's 2-0 win over Brentford last month, while new signing Federico Chiesa is still lacking match fitness after his £12.5m move from Juventus - having not featured for the club since the start of pre-season.

Meanwhile, Harvey Elliot was sent home from the latest England Under-21 camp for "further medical assessment" at Anfield. Argentina's clash against Colombia will see Mac Allister come up against a Liverpool team-mate in Luis Diaz as the two rivals go toe-to-toe for vital qualifying points. Mac Allister's side are currently top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table for South American teams, with six wins from seven games and just one defeat giving them 18 points.

Uruguay are second with 14 points, with third-placed Colombia knowing they can close the gap to two points with a win.
