MIRI (Sept 8): The Lions Club of Miri Host has handed over its completed wall mural to the management of the Tua Pek Kong Temple at Jalan Bendahara here recently. The mural sponsorship was the club’s initiative in celebrating the temple’s 111th anniversary this year, as well as to contribute to the city’s tourism efforts.

The handover ceremony was presented by Lions Club Governor of District 308-A2 Annie Ho Chui Leng to the temple’s person-in-charge Temenggung Yong Vui Seng, witnessed by Lions Club of Miri Host president Alan Ling. According to Ling, the mural, which was painted by talented local artist Then Chan Fah, depicted the image of the Gunung Mulu National Park. The Gunung Mulu National Park, he said, was chosen as the subject of the mural, due to it being in northern Sarawak and its global recognition as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation’s (Unesco) world heritage sites.

“The club is grateful for having been given the opportunity to sponsor the mural. “Tua Pek Kong Miri has become a focal point for local and foreign tourists from various religious backgrounds due to its beauty and uniqueness, and the temple has indeed become a symbol of unity and tolerance,” said Ling. Also present were Lions Club national director Dato Yeow Wah Chin and committee members, and the temple’s management committee led by Tay Chun Wei.
