Pune: Six mobile AED (automated external defibrillator) machines have been set up at the new terminal building, besides a medical emergency room to cater to sudden cardiac arrests among people of all age groups. Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke said that these six machines had been set up at the arrival area, departure area, near the check-in counters, at the security hold area, and at the international security hold area. "These AED machines have been strategically placed at key locations throughout the terminal.

These AEDs are crucial for delivering immediate electric shocks to restore normal heart rhythms during sudden cardiac arrest , thereby significantly improving survival rates," Dhoke said. In addition, a medical emergency room has been opened at the new terminal building in coordination with Ruby Hall Clinic. Airport officials said that a doctor and a nurse will be stationed at the medical room all the time to tend to any kind of emergencies.

"The medical emergency room, which is conveniently located in the check-in area of the new building, will provide free medical services to all passengers. It is operated by medical professionals from Ruby Hall Clinic. Open round the clock, it aims to offer continuous support and address various medical needs of travelling passengers," Dhoke added.

An AED machine is a portable unit that can be used to treat someone who has had a sudden cardiac arrest. These machines are small, lightweight, and easy to use. "The ones set up at the airport have an automatic voice instruction system which can be turned on at the press of a button.

One just needs to follow the instructions. Anyone, including common passengers, can use it," an airport official said. On Thursday, a CISF personnel saved the life of a passenger who had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at the Delhi international airport.

Also, on July 30, an Air India flight from Pune to Lucknow turned back due to a medical emergency onboard. On March 17 last year, a doctor and cabin crew saved a patient's life on an Air India Express flight from Delhi to Pune. "Besides the MI Room and AEDs, an on-site ambulance has been positioned on the city side of the airport to handle medical emergencies swiftly and efficiently," the director said.
