The Cathedral School Alumni Association, Inc., New York Metro Chapter, presented the award to Dr. Nyan, with the inscription: “THE ARCHBISHOP MICHAEL K.
FRANCIS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Presented to DOUGBEH C. NYAN for Excellence in Biomedical Science.” This accolade, named after one of Liberia’s most revered religious leaders, celebrates individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to science and public health.
The award was delivered by compatriot Kélétigui Steve Tolbert II, with Dr. Nyan expressing heartfelt gratitude in a statement: “It’s an honor to be awarded the ‘Archbishop Michael K. Francis Achievement Award for Excellence in Biomedical Science.

Nyan, a medical doctor, infectious disease expert, and winner of the 2017 African Innovation Prize for Social Impact, has a remarkable record in biomedical research. His work focuses on developing rapid, affordable diagnostic tools for detecting infectious diseases, particularly in underprivileged communities. Among his key achievements is the development of a novel multiplex isothermal amplification method for rapid virus detection, which has been recognized globally.
