A “yes” vote on Measure 9-173 would increase the number of Deschutes County commissioners from three to five. Here’s why that’s a smart thing to do: Since the formation of Deschutes County in 1916, we’ve had only three commissioners. Yet our county has grown from 5,000 people then to over 200,000 today, and the issues that we face have only become more complex.
Having five commissioners would bring a greater breadth of expertise and broader range of perspectives to tackle tough problems. Our commissioners make critical decisions on issues from land use and our county roads to public health and community justice. Why wouldn’t we want more smart people weighing in on how to wisely spend our tax dollars? Speaking of taxes, adding two more commissioners will not increase them.
A spokeswoman from the county confirmed that in a Bulletin article last month. In fact, having more commissioners with greater collective expertise may save us money by avoiding expensive mistakes like recent land use and sheriff’s office lawsuits which have cost the county millions of dollars. Voting YES on 9-173 will help to ensure that our beautiful county remains a great place to live, work and play.
That’s why it’s supported by the League of Women Voters, the mayor of Redmond and a majority of the Redmond City Council, the Bend City Council, and the Sisters City Council. Vote YES on 9-173 for better governance and more effective representation for Central Oregonians. — Angelique Los.
