As a longtime resident of the East Bay, I’ve witnessed firsthand the fragile beauty of our coastal ecosystems. Expanding couldn’t come at a more critical time. Our marine wildlife is under constant threat from oil spills and plastic pollution, jeopardizing their very existence.
Imagine the heartbreak of seeing oil-coated seabirds struggle for life, or once-teeming reefs reduced to barren wastelands. These are real threats lurking on our doorstep. Expanding marine protected areas isn’t just about safeguarding habitats; it’s about ensuring that future generations can experience the awe of watching dolphins and otters play in the waves as I had the opportunity to do growing up.
I urge you to call on Gov. Newsom to expand marine protected areas; indispensable for ocean protection. Together, we can keep the northern coast a beacon of environmental diversity, not a monstrosity of overpollution and ecological devastation.

The Democrats cannot blame former President Trump and the Republicans for this if nothing is done now. I am puzzled by the debate about whether Joe Biden should stay in the race because what is going on is patently clear. Most of us have had parents or grandparents who had gotten too old to drive, but they are too impaired or stubborn to acknowledge it.
Sorry, Joe. You have had decades of dedicated service to your country, but if you will not hand over your keys, it is time to take them away. If not, you could cause a catastrophic tragedy.
Let’s face it. President Biden is being excessively and unfairly harassed about his age — in contrast with former President Trump, whose age and infirmities therefrom (e.g.
, inane comments recorded at campaign events) are treated with kid gloves. Why? Mr. Biden is a decent, honorable man who would not retaliate, whereas Mr.
Trump is the opposite, who would (and does!) inflict the most damaging revenge he can on any detractors. Everyone, including the press, fears Trump’s withering blowback on social media and his penchant for suing or otherwise punishing his critics. If equal treatment can’t be accorded the presidential candidates with respect to their mental acuity, aren’t voters wise to ignore any one-sided criticism?.
