Tuesday, August 20, 2024 The Natchez Convention Center, situated in the historic downtown of Natchez, Mississippi, is embarking on a significant multi-million dollar renovation project. This ambitious endeavor marks the most extensive upgrade in the center’s history, aiming to rejuvenate and modernize the facility. Currently in progress, the first phase of the renovation is centered on the 18,000-square-foot exhibit hall, the highlight of the 32,000-square-foot complex.

This phase involves a complete overhaul, including fresh paint, new carpeting, intricate trim work, and enhanced wall coverings to create a sophisticated and modernized environment for events. The objective is to elevate both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the convention center. “We are thrilled to embark on this exciting renovation project that will position the Natchez Convention Center as the most celebrated facility of its kind in Mississippi.

Thousands of people have crowded the Convention Center over the years. From firefighters to soldiers, kindergarten teachers to leaders of our state’s community colleges, we’ve seen them all. And one of the best parts of my job as mayor has been the opportunity to welcome them all to Natchez!” exclaimed Dan M.

Gibson, Mayor of Natchez . “This renovation represents a significant investment in our local economy and will further solidify Natchez’s reputation as a premier destination for conventions and conferences.” Following the exhibit hall’s anticipated completion in Fall 2024, the second phase will begin.

This phase will focus on refurbishing the long hall and entry foyers off Main Street, alongside a full restoration of the lower-level convention center restrooms. Inspired by grand conference venues like the Homestead in West Virginia and the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, the renovation will incorporate architectural features such as arched case openings, finely-trimmed doors, wood-grained flooring, and exquisite lighting to enhance the facility’s interiors while maintaining the distinct character of its historic setting. The renovation project is being led by local architect Johnny Waycaster, who originally designed the facility over two decades ago.

Marjorie Feltus Hawkins of Feltus-Hawkins Design has played a crucial role in shaping the renovation plans, ensuring they capture the unique Natchez atmosphere. “I am confident that the outcome of this renovation will be transformational for convention traffic to Natchez,” added Gibson . Mayor’s credit also goes to James Johnston, the city’s Director of Community Development, and the Board of Aldermen for their dedication to the project, all achieved without raising taxes.

The Convention Center’s management team, under the leadership of Mr. Warren Reuther, has been pivotal in ensuring that the center’s operations face minimal disruption during the renovation. With the Natchez Grand Hotel, ongoing upgrades to the Natchez Civic Center and Natchez City Auditorium, and the soon-to-open “River Room” at the Historic Natchez Depot on Broadway Street, Natchez is on track to become a premier convention destination for the future.
