Courtesy of Source Music By Pyo Kyung-min Several iconic K-pop girl groups that once dominated the industry are reuniting after years apart. Groups including 2NE1, GFriend and Lovelyz, known for their massive hits and dedicated followings, are planning anniversary celebrations that will bring the members back together for concerts and special projects.

Source Music, the former agency of GFriend, announced Tuesday that the six-member group will be launching a 10-year anniversary project, marking its first official reunion since disbanding in 2021 . "Next January, GFriend will commemorate its 10th anniversary with a special project for the fans ..

. The members' wish is to create cherished memories for Buddy (GFriend's official name for its fans) led to this project. We ask for your anticipation and support," the label announced.

Having debuted in 2015 with the iconic "Season of Glass" album, GFriend ultimately disbanded after its members' contracts with Source Music expired in 2021. Since then, members Eunha, SinB and Umji formed the K-pop trio VIVIZ, while Yerin and Yuju pursued solo careers and Sowon transitioned to acting. K-pop girl group Lovelyz will hold its 10th-anniversary reunion concert, slated for Nov.

Lovelyz, who debuted in 2014, announced plans earlier this month for a full-group concert to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The reunion is set for Nov. 16 and 17 at Seoul's Jamsil Students' Gymnasium. This will mark the group's first in-person performance together in nearly four years, following its 2020 online concert, "Lovelyz ONTACT CONCERT — Deep Forest.

" The group is also expected to release new music around the time of the event. Known for its sweet, youthful image, Lovelyz delivered hits like "Hi~," "Destiny" and "Ah-Choo" during its career. However, the group disbanded after its members' contracts with Woollim Entertainment ended , unable to surpass the notorious "seven-year curse" that often ends K-pop groups' careers.

The group, which debuted in 2009 and disbanded in 2016, will kick off an Asia tour with a concert in Seoul, scheduled for Oct. 4 to Oct. 6 at the Olympic Hall in Songpa District.

Despite having disbanded eight years ago, 2NE1 has seen overwhelming demand from fans worldwide, leading to additional shows in Kobe and Tokyo, as well as tour stops in cities like Manila, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Taipei. A music industry insider commented on the surge of K-pop girl group reunions, citing both the artists' and fans' desire to reconnect. "Many groups disband for various, often inexplicable reasons, including contract conditions, but I believe the members' desire to continue group activities and the fans' wishes to see them again play the biggest roles in these reunion projects," the insider said on the condition of anonymity.

"Even though they disbanded, that may not have been the consensus of the entire group. If the disbandment was unavoidable but demand still exists, a 10th anniversary is a perfect occasion for a reunion. It's a win for the artists, the agencies, and, most importantly, a huge gift to the fans who have waited for them.
