However, the surge of tourism has taken a toll on popular destinations like Phuket and Pattaya.
These bustling resorts face challenges such as environmental strain and overburdened infrastructure, particularly in iconic spots like Maya Bay. Amid the chaos of crowded tourist hubs, Koh Mah, a serene island in the Gulf of Thailand, offers a peaceful alternative. With only 1,200 permanent residents, this idyllic escape remains largely untouched and retains its natural charm.
Unlike its more commercialized counterparts, Koh Mah provides a tranquil experience away from the crowds. The island spans just 16 square kilometers, with approximately 95% of its land privately owned. Its unique infrastructure is a stark contrast to Thailand’s bustling tourist hubs, boasting no high-rise buildings and only one cash machine.
These features contribute to the island’s unspoiled and relaxed atmosphere. Tourism on Koh Mah only began in 1985 when Jakrapad Taveteekul, a coconut plantation owner, decided to open a small collection of ten simple, thatched-roof huts on his property. This careful and gradual approach to tourism helped the island retain its pristine environment .
