Gbenga Odogun The Nigerian Medical Association, Kogi State Chapter, has suspended its Chairman, Dr Olusola Baoku, for alleged constitutional, administrative and financial infringements. After an emergency congress held in Lokoja, the state capital, on Saturday, a former Chairman of the chapter, Dr David Ayemila, told journalists that a committee was constituted to hold sway till August 11, 2024, when election an election would be held to produce new state executives. According to him, the congress resolved to ensure no vacuum exists by empowering the committee of the Past Chairmen, Chaired by himself and Dr Zubair Kabiru as Secretary, to take over the running of the association till when a new election is conducted and new officers emerge.

Ayemila attributed the crisis that affected the association to the way the suspended chairman handled the association’s affairs. He stated, “Our committee was inaugurated today, July 13, 2024, to watch the activities of the Nigeria Medical Association until August 11 when a new leadership of the association would be elected.” Ayemila explained that the decision for the dissolution of the former state exco was due to their failure to manage the association well and prevent avoidable challenges to which the association was subjected, He said it was decided that the only way out was to constitute the new interim management committee.

Ayemila further blamed the disbanded state officers for their inability to organise meetings hence, the decision to have a new organ that will steer the affairs of the association. He implored members to support and cooperate with them to discharge their assignment. “The congress also empowered the Association of Past Chairmen by transmitting all the powers of the State Officers Committee to the Committee of Past Chairmen.

“The committee is to ensure that the medical and surgical outreach proposed for Okene holds, including a successful election and Annual General Meeting.” Copyright PUNCH All rights reserved.
