The end of the cruise ship season for Southeast Alaska is approaching, as the big ships make their way northwest, down the Aleutian Chain, headed for the winter cruise season in the far east. “Repositioning season,” in April and September, comprise the bulk of Kodiak’s cruise ship visits. Two ships are scheduled to spend the day here today.

Viking Cruises’ Viking Orion was scheduled to tie up at Pier Two at 8 a.m. today.



The 745-foot ship is full with 930 passengers (465 crew). It left Seward Wednesday, and will sail to Dutch Harbor at 6 p.m.

Then, it’s off to Sapporo and Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday. Silversea Cruise Lines “luxury cruiser” Silver Nova is scheduled to spend the day at anchor off Gibson Cove, and lighter a portion of its 728 passengers (556 crew) to Oscar’s Dock. The first lighter was scheduled to leave the Silver Nova at 7 a.

m. The last will leave Oscar’s Dock at 3:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the 800-foot ship hauls anchor and sails directly to Hokkaido Island in Northern Japan.

Holland America’s 935-foot Noordam spent the day at Pier Two on Wednesday. The 1,943-passenger (784 crew) ship sailed directly from Vancouver, B.C.

, and headed for Anchorage after a six-hour stay. A scheduled Oct. 3 visit from the Noorham has been canceled, Kodiak Port Agent Chris Paulson said.

The last cruise ship to visit Kodiak is Oct. 15..
