Summary The Airbus A321neo aircraft will modernize KLM's fleet of narrowbody aircraft. The aircraft will help KLM reduce fuel burn and carbon emissions by 20% and provide better economics. Passengers will enjoy a superior inflight experience since Airbus' Airspace Cabins are onboard the A321neo.

Dutch carrier KLM today took delivery of its first Airbus A321neo aircraft. Further deliveries of the aircraft type will help the airline modernize its narrowbody fleet and make KLM's operations greener and more economical. Apart from the advantages the aircraft type offers for the airline, passengers flying the aircraft will have a lot to look forward to as well, with newer and more comfortable cabins enhancing the onboard experience.

The new aircraft type KLM today received its first Airbus A321neo , and in keeping with its tradition, the airline has named this particular aircraft "Swallowtail". In fact, the carrier has already decided the names of the first four A321neo aircraft that will be delivered. KLM detailed that its employees chose the theme of the Airbus A321neo fleet, with the aircraft being named after butterflies.

The new aircraft type will play an integral role in the fleet modernization of the airline, as operating the A321neo will be more efficient in terms of fuel burn and, consequently, will reduce the operational economics of the aircraft. The aircraft type offers 20% lower fuel burn and carbon emissions when compared to previous-generation narrowbody aircraft. Moreover, the aircraft reduces the noise footprint by 50% from previous models.

The carrier also revealed earlier this year that the aircraft type would initially be operated to important markets within Continental Europe, such as Stockholm, Berlin, and Copenhagen . In addition, KLM announced that the A321neo will sport a modified livery. The new paint scheme will feature a redesigned nose and a sunglasses effect around the cockpit windows.

Enhanced cabin experience While the airline will enjoy a reduced carbon footprint and operational costs, the passengers will, on the other hand, enjoy a superior inflight experience, which the cabin onboard the A321neo is known to offer. With the A321neo being the largest aircraft within the A320neo family, the aircraft offers more space onboard when compared to any of its previous iterations while also featuring Airbus' latest generation Airspace Cabins featuring amenities such as a more spacious ambiance, making boarding and inflight experiences better, while also featuring XL overhead bins which provide 60% more luggage capacity, thus making the whole experience even more comfortable. The A321neo will be configured to accommodate a total of 227 passengers split across two cabin classes.

The A321neo will definitely be a move away from the airline's existing fleet of narrowbody aircraft, which solely consists of the Boeing 737 family aircraft (-700s, -800s, and -900s). Other amenities within the cabin include the latest lighting system for passenger comfort and the integration of USB-C ports into every seat onboard the aircraft, ensuring that passengers keep their electronic devices powered up throughout the flight. Part of a larger order The A321neo delivered to KLM is part of a massive order placed by Air France-KLM Group in 2021.

The order consisted of 100 A320neo family aircraft for KLM and Transavia (Netherlands and France), with an option for another 60 aircraft of the type, along with four A350F jets destined for Air France, also with an option for an additional four jets. The Air France-KLM Group has become Airbus’ latest conquest this week, as the planemaker has snagged another significant order from the European group The A321neo has proven to be popular with customers worldwide with over 90 airlines operating the type, while Airbus holds a significant order backlog for the type. Considering that the A321neo can accommodate up to 50 additional seats and has an additional operational range of 600 miles compared to the smaller A320neo, it is easy to see why it is popular.

Considering that many of KLM's markets within Europe are pushing for maximum efficiency and sustainability in air travel, the A321neo will serve the airline well in the years to come..
