The King has spoken of his hopes that “mutual respect and understanding” will unite the nation in the wake of the riots following the killing of three young girls in Southport , England. The monarch praised the “ community spirit ” of Britain that has “countered the aggression and criminality from a few”, in a series of conversations with those leading the response.

He is understood to have told Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and police chiefs how he has been “greatly encouraged” by the “compassion and resilience of the many” in the face of violence, as he thanked the emergency services for their work in restoring peace.
