I f you’re a fan of chest freezers you’ll love the EV9. Blocky is the word. The designer obviously had a thing for Lego.

Or perhaps filing cabinets. Undeniably it’s imposing. It is similar in size to a Land Rover Defender 110 but looks even bigger, as though the Barbican has sprouted wheels.



In a world of slightly bland electric cars it certainly stands out. If you can get past the physical size of the thing — multistorey car parks are not this beast’s natural environment — the EV9 is all very modern and practical. Its near 100 kWh battery gives a range between charges of up to 349 miles.

There are two-wheel and four-wheel-drive versions and two power outputs, which vary from the perky (the Air version with 200bhp and rear-wheel drive) to the downright aggressive (the GT-Line with 378bhp and all-wheel drive). Oh, and it starts at just over £65,000 for the base car to £77,000 for the top-of-the-range GT-Line S six-seater..
