The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) has refuted filmmaker Karan Johar's recent claim that high ticket and food prices at theatres are deterring moviegoers. Johar had stated in a roundtable discussion that a family outing to the movies could cost a hefty ₹10,000. In a statement released by MAI President Kamal Gianchandani, the association challenged Johar's assertion, providing data on average ticket prices.

He suggested that this was contributing to a decline in movie viewership. In a statement posted on behalf of MAI President Kamal Gianchandani, the association has addressed Karan’s claim. “The reports carried Mr.
Karan Johar's comments suggesting that cinema exhibitors are responsible for high ticket and food & beverage (F&B) prices. We believe it is essential to provide a more balanced view on this matter,” read the statement. In an interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan had said that since a movie outing for a family can cost as much as ₹10,000, families do not spend that much on films, reducing their trips to the theatre.
