The bodies of David Neave and Rodney Ingram, both aged 65 and from Kangaroo Island, were found in the waters off the coast of Cassini after their capsized boat sparked a large scale search just after 4.15pm on Wednesday.

The two experienced boaties knew the waters very well and were popular residents on the island off the South Australia coast, The Advertiser reported. For decades, the men had fished for calamari, King George whiting and snapper at the northern end of the island which was supplied to a Kangaroo Island seafood outlet. It's believed the professional fishermen got into trouble in the water after a thick fog appeared.

Friends became worried after they spotted the reflection of the men's upturned boat on the water, 7News reported. After their mates called triple-0, the 4.88m long vessel was spotted capsized in the waters around Cape Cassini late on Wednesday, with their bodies found not long after, near their boat.

Locals described the fog as 'thick' and 'pea soup' and said it was not a common occurrence on the island, adding the waters had been calm all day. Rodney Ingram, 65, (pictured) headed out on Wednesday to catch whiting with his mate but the pair encountered a thick fog David Neave, 65, (pictured) was also part of Kangaroo Island's football community and played for 40 seasons Kangaroo Island mayor Michael Pengilly described the tragedy as 'a terribly sad day for Kangaroo Island'. 'We experienced a tragedy last night after losing two of our very local men who were just going about their business,' he told reporters.

Mr Neave is also understood to have played football in Kangaroo Island's local B Grade football team Wisanger, into his 50s – and played more than 500 games over 40 seasons.

When police recovered the boat, they also found two lifejackets, which the men reportedly didn't use often. The experienced fishermen's boat (pictured) was found capsized with the men's bodies close by off the coast of Cassini, Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Police also recovered two life jackets that the men were not wearing 'I think it's a warning to everybody whether across the state, across Australia,' he said.

'If you go out in a small boat, you should wear a life jacket.' The mayor said the professional fishermen will be 'very much mourned' and the community will stand by their families and support them as much as they can.
