Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film, Emergency, which explores the period of political turmoil during former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's emergency rule from 1975 to 1977, is facing severe backlash from Sikh organizations across India. Scheduled for release on September 6, the film has sparked controversy due to allegations that it misrepresents Sikh history and distorts facts. Emergency Controversy The film's trailer, released on August 14, has become a focal point of dispute.

Despite amassing over five million views, it has garnered only 461 likes, reflecting widespread discontent. Sikh groups argue that the trailer misrepresents their community, particularly through its portrayal of Khalistani separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The trailer features a dialogue attributed to Bhindranwale that declares, "Your party wants votes, and we want Khalistan.

" This has angered Sikh groups, who assert that Bhindranwale never made such a demand, as per reports. Accordingg to India Today , the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has voiced strong objections, sending letters to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging a ban on the film. They argue that the film could incite hatred and further misrepresent the Sikh community.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also issued a legal notice demanding the removal of the trailer and a public apology, citing that the portrayal of Bhindranwale is historically inaccurate. Additional Criticisms The backlash is compounded by Kangana Ranaut’s previous controversial remarks about the farmers' protests. In interviews, Ranaut made statements alleging criminal activities at protest sites, which have inflamed sentiments, particularly in Punjab.

These comments have intensified calls for a ban, with many believing the film portrays Sikhs negatively. The controversy escalated when the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, backed by Congress, passed a resolution condemning Ranaut for her remarks against the farmers. This political backing could have added to the film’s polarizing effect.

Threats and Political Reactions The situation has taken a darker turn with pro-Khalistani elements issuing death threats to Ranaut and the film’s producers. In a video circulating on social media, a pro-Khalistani figure warned of severe repercussions if Bhindranwale is depicted unfavorably. In response to the mounting pressure, Sikh organizations continue to rally for the film's ban.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has joined the protests, with MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal condemning the film as "anti-Sikh" and accusing Ranaut of distorting historical facts. The Punjab government has yet to make a definitive statement, but the Telangana government is reportedly considering the ban following a meeting with Sikh representatives. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has assured the delegation that their concerns will be taken into account.
