Saturday, October 5, 2024 The Goldfields region’s tourism and horse racing sectors are set to receive a substantial boost thanks to a $1.5 million investment by the Cook Government. This commitment is aimed at creating a major new sporting attraction within the annual Kalgoorlie Race Round, an event that has long been central to the local community and its economy.

The government’s support is expected to provide lasting benefits, not only by increasing tourism but also by enhancing the prominence of horse racing in the region. At the heart of this initiative is the introduction of the ‘Golden Saddle’ slot race, a new addition to the Kalgoorlie Race Round. With a prize pool of $1 million, this race is expected to attract top competitors from across the country.

Set to be run over 1100 meters on the same day as the prestigious $150,000 Kalgoorlie Cup, the race will significantly elevate the profile of the Kalgoorlie Race Round and further establish it as one of the premier racing events in Australia. Premier Roger Cook made the exciting announcement while in the Goldfields, where he was attending the Kalgoorlie Cup trophy presentation. His government’s backing of the new slot race is seen as a game-changer for the event, which has long been a fixture in the region’s calendar.

By adding another major race with a significant prize, the event is expected to draw larger crowds and increased media attention, amplifying its importance within the national horse racing circ.
