The two stars of the film have very different views of what the movie is about. Baldoni highlighted the domestic violence in the storyline while Lively reportedly saw it as her 'Oscar vehicle' and played up the romantic nature of the film. The book's author, Colleen Hoover, and much of the cast and crew have sided with Blake in the mysterious feud, which has led to a sequel to the film being in jeopardy.

Baldoni already owns the rights to Hoover's It Starts With Us which follows the story of Lily and Atlas, the homeless boy she befriends as a teenager and later runs into as an adult in It Ends With Us. The drama reportedly began with rumors of onset tension between Lively and Baldoni. Lively and Baldoni apparently clashed on-set with her accusing him of 'fat-shaming' her.

That incident started when Baldoni, who has back issues, asked his personal trainer for guidance on how to safely protect his back, during a scene in which he had to lift 5'10" Lively into the air. Baldoni allegedly asked the trainer how much Lively weighed and asked for help preparing his back to avoid becoming injured. I cried an embarrassing amount and tried to hide it but probably failed. #itendswithus I am so proud of you and I love you friend !!!! ❤️,' her caption began Justin commented on the post, gushing: 'This makes my heart burst. I love you both so much ❤️❤️❤️' That animosity has spilled into post-production and publicity to the extent that Lively has now been accused of effectively bullying Baldoni out of his first major movie.

It was Baldoni who bought the rights to Hoover's novel and directed the movie but, reportedly Lively was unhappy with Baldoni's final cut, so she and her husband Ryan Reynolds , 47, paid for their own editor to cut a different one. Baldoni's cut 'tested better' but the studio went with Lively's, after the actress, who is one of Taylor Swift' s best friends, 'strongly suggested that if they didn't use her version, they wouldn't be able to use Taylor's song' My Tears Richochet in the movie. Critics of Lively's have pointed to her tone-deaf promotion of the film, where, instead of bringing awareness to domestic violence issues, she chose instead to promote her new hair care line Blake Brown, and urged fans to 'grab your friends, wear your florals and head out to see it!' as if she were promoting a romantic comedy.
