Long yellow buses have long been a sign of the school year to come. They're often packed with children riding to or from school, some happily, others not so happily. This weekend, however, two buses will mean more than the start of school.

Those buses will hold the keys to health for students seeking educational success. From 9 a.m.

to 3 p.m. Saturday, Junior Service League of Brazosport members will be stationed at the Clute Kroger, 800 Dixie Drive, and Angleton Kroger, 1804 N.

Velasco St. to collect donations which will benefit the Brazosport and Angleton ISDs. “We are collecting items to give to both school districts to help the nurses for the school year,” Junior Service League member Chelsie Dickson said.

“There was a need identified through the schools and we are just trying to meet that need." Although Dickson is fairly new to the organization, her heart is for the community, she said. She sees the Stuff the Bus event as an asset and relief for the local school districts, she said.

“I moved to Lake Jackson about a year ago and I joined to make some friends and get involved in the community, and I’ve done just that,” she said. “I’ve had the opportunity to get to know people in the community and serve it to the best of my ability, so that really has made me feel like I truly live here.” School nurses reached out to the organization and said they are in need of: facial tissue, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, adhesive bandages, baby wipes, resealable bags, feminine hygiene items and disposable rubber gloves.

“These are items that they tend to run short on,” Dickson said. ”Our goal is to help cover some of those needs for the kids and make sure the nurses don’t have to pay for the supplies out of their own pocket.” The members of the service have dedicated their time to helping the community for years, with their Stuff the Bus event alone being a long-time hit.

“Junior Service League is a wonderful organization of women that look for ways to help the community wherever we’re needed,” Sustainer Liaison Terri Bernhardt said. This year, the need hits home as one of their members actually works in the school district. “This is actually our first event for the fall and we’re very excited about it,” Dickson said.

“One of our JSL members is a school nurse so we’re just excited to help her and her coworkers, as well as the students.”.
