The exhibition "Jumping Off," featuring new creations by sculptor Ginny Freitag and painter Vonni Sparks, will open with a First Friday reception from 5-9 p.m. Sept.

6 at Gallery 9, 124 S. Ninth St. Both artists consider this show a "jump" into new territory in terms of approach, materials and technique.

In this way, Freitag says, "It's about leaving convention behind and moving forward." Freitag has been working in clay for 43 years and never tires of the magic of the glazing process and moments of spontaneous creativity that mark her work. Sparks has been painting for 30 years and has developed an approach to her work that is created in a fever of spontaneity, with little pre-planning, preferring instead to watch the paintings magically grow on their own.

Her narrative paintings have been described as "tales worth telling." In that way, all the works in "Jumping Off" complement each other. Both artists say their work speaks to their lives as women, nurturing family and staying in tune with the beauty of the natural world.

The exhibition can be viewed Sept. 4-29 during regular gallery hours from 11 a.m.

-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.

m. Sunday. For more information, visit gallerynine.
