David Harker, known as the cannibal killer, was convicted of killing Patterson in Teesside, about 70 miles north of Leeds, and has been in jail since. The pair had met only a few weeks before and met up at a park to have a few drinks when Harker killed her. Patterson had been struggling with alcoholism and depression, according to local news outlet the Teeside Gazette, with her partner Alan Taylor saying that she would go on brings regularly.

She never returned home after going out in April of 1998, sparking a month-long search, and when she was found, her body was in pieces. Police did not suspect Harker until they talked to Patterson's friends about who she was seeing. “Harker has told friends and psychiatrists at Ashworth hospital that he killed her,” lead investigator Superintendent Barry Peart testified later in court.

“He also said he had eaten part of her thigh, fried it and eaten it with pasta and cheese.” Patterson's partner said he wanted to know where her remains were, but the authorities were never able to find the head and limbs. He even went as far as to search hi.
