The Today hosts reflected on a clip of Ina, 76, talking to Hoda about the 'really scary' conversation she had with Jeffrey, 77, that led to their brief split 10 years into their union.

'I think it reminded me [that] when a couple grows, you have to let the other person grow, too,' Hoda, 60, said passionately. 'You [hear] people say you are not the girl I married. The girl you married is different,' she pointed out.



Hoda, who split from fiancé Joel Schiffman in 2022, said she thought Ina and Jeffrey would have 'reintroduced' themselves to each other. Jenna, 42, agreed, adding it shows that honesty is the best policy in a relationship.

'It also shows that honesty, being completely transparent with yourself and with somebody else, even if it's terribly scary,' she pointed out. 'I am sure part of her wanted him to say, "No, we got to work this out,"' she said. Hoda then encouraged viewers to have the difficult conversation, like Ina did.

'Think about a conversation you want to have right now with somebody,' she said. 'It's on your heart. You feel like you really want to do it but you are afraid to do it because you think it will go away or it was just one problem or sweep it under the rug.

But having the conversation frees you.' Jenna added that having difficult conversations was also about 'owning your worth.' Hoda sat down with Ina Garten to speak about her upbringing and her relationships, including a rough patch with her husband Jeffrey.

'It shows you what they are all about. It's a beautiful relationship.' Earlier on Today, Ina opened up about the 'really scary' conversation she had with her husband that led to their brief split in a preview clip of her upcoming interview with Hoda.

'We took a walk on the beach, and I just said to him, "I need to be on my own for a little while,"' Ina, 76, told Hoda in the clip aired on Wednesday. The Barefoot Contessa, who married Jeffrey in 1968, admitted his response made it even more difficult. 'What made it even harder is he said, "If you feel like you need to be on your own, you need to be on your own,"' she recalled.

The cook and author said Jeffrey then went back to Washington, where he was working at the time, and she didn't go with him - but she has no regrets. 'I felt I said the right thing, but it was really scary, because I said it to somebody I really deeply loved,' she recounted. The beloved couple spent six weeks apart before they ultimately decided to give their love another go as 'equals.
