Jannik Sinner and British music icon Seal shared a touching embrace after the tennis world No. 1's remarkable US Open victory on Sunday. The Italian sensation clinched his first US Open title with a dominant performance, beating local favourite Taylor Fritz in straight sets.
After seeing off Britain's Jack Draper in Friday's one-sided semi-final, Sinner picked up where he left off, beating Fritz in the opening game in New York. Among the star-studded crowd, which included Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves, rockstar Jon Bon Jovi, and Martha Stewart, Seal was spotted sitting two rows behind Sinner's coaches. The British singer was among the friends and family who waited nearly two hours after the match ended for Sinner to collect his trophy.
According to The Washington Post, Sinner, 23, first met the 'Kiss From a Rose' singer at the US Open two years ago and kept in touch. “He proves that you can have it all, be at the top of the world, and still have compassion, balance, love, and understanding of the good fortune of your position,” Seal told The Washington Post. “And therefore use it in the most positive and beautiful way.
” Seal said while facing an American at the U.S. Open "was never going to be easy", he was pleasantly surprised by the liking the local crowd took for Sinner.
“The New York crowd is a very knowledgeable crowd when it comes to tennis and I think they had a respect and a liking for Jannik - who’s impossible not to like,” he concluded. Sinner has won six titles this year and becomes the youngest man to win both hard-court majors in the same season and only the fourth male player in history to achieve the feat – after Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Mats Wilander. In an on-court interview following his historic win, Sinner said the US title means "so much" because the last period of his career "wasn't easy" for him after he tested positive for a prohibited steroid.
