Patna: A phone call from a wrong number seven years ago changed their lives — for good or bad is debatable. But the women, now 25 and 26, became best friends. The story would have been simple had it ended here.

But, they developed romantic feelings as teenaged girls and wanted to marry each other to spend the rest of their lives together. As time passed, the women, who belong to remote villages of Bihar, had to give in to their family’s pressure and get married to men in Lakhisarai and Patna in 2017 and 2020 respectively. They went on to have children as well but they continued with their relationship.

However, as the saying goes, love knows no boundary, they decided to leave their respective families. They even managed to elope to get married — which is illegal in India — but Jamui district police on Tuesday handed the two women over to their respective families. “They were adamant on staying together after leaving their families.

We have handed them over to their respective families,” Jamui mahila thana station house officer Priti Kumari told the TOI on Tuesday. The whole story took a curious turn on Monday when the 25-year-old woman’s family came to know about her elopement plan and informed the police. The family members told the police that she had called the other woman from Patna for a meeting at a secret location in Jamui town.

Soon, the police managed to trace them and convinced them to go back to their respective families. Police said both the girls had told about their decision to marry each other to their families in 2023, which was met with strong objection and warnings. Another such illegal marriage was reported from Gopalganj district where a woman married her maternal aunt, who had left her husband, at a temple on Monday.

In a video, which has gone viral on social media, the niece and maternal aunt can purportedly be seen exchanging garlands at a local temple. They had been in a relationship for the past three years. “She (niece) is very beautiful.

I was afraid that if she got married somewhere else, she would leave me. So, I decided to marry her,” the aunt told the media.
