Chancellor Rachel Reeves warned beforehand that 'difficult decisions' would be made as Labour hikes taxes in a move Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says is to 'prevent devastating austerity'. After weeks of speculation and leaks, Ms Reeves today became the first female Chancellor to deliver the UK budget - as she outlined Labour's plan to rake in a £40million a year extra in one of the biggest ever raids at a fiscal event.
'Any Chancellor standing here today would face this reality, and any responsible Chancellor would take action,' she told the Commons. That is why today, I am restoring stability to our public finances and rebuilding our public services.'
