SCOTS parents are struggling to pay for school uniforms as the cost of living crisis continues. Edinburgh charity The Leith Collective told how school uniforms are now considered a "luxury item". They say hard-up parents can't afford to shell out hundreds on shirts, trousers and shoes. Mum Martina, who works full-time as a teacher, told STV News : "I’m not on any benefits, and I struggle.

"For me it’s important to have that, so if I can save here, I can give that to my children.

" Sara Thomson, who runs a uniform bank, said: "We’ve got high, high demand for every single piece of clothing , shoes, pencils, pencil cases. It’s a lot more than last year." Local councils offer support to households with the cost of school clothes and shoes, but those who don't receive it are facing hardship.

"More money in family pockets is really important, and we could urge the eligibility to be expanded for the school clothing grant." The grant is worth at least £120 per child of primary school age and £150 per child of secondary school age.

In the Highlands, grants of £160 are available for primary school pupils and £172 for those in secondary school. In Clackmannanshire, payments amount to £145 for primary school and £185 for secondary school.

Three councils—North Ayrshire , Shetland Islands, and South Lanarkshire – also offer grants to parents with eligible three and four-year-olds in nursery..
