I t is the day when we turn the page, at least for those of us old-fashioned enough to have traditional diaries and calendars. It would be splendid if we could also turn the page on the economic issues that preoccupied us at the end of 2024. “Out with the old” in this context would be rather nice.

The economy is no great respecter of calendars. Growth briefly returned during 2024 and inflation was for a short time below the official 2 per cent target. By the end of the year growth had petered out and inflation was back up to 2.



6 per cent. A downward revision of gross domestic product (GDP) growth from 0.1 per cent to zero in the third quarter was an end-of-year.
