Known for its picturesque towns and pristine beaches, Italy's Amalfi Coast is heaven for all the coastal babies. The UNESCO World Heritage site attracts nearly five million visitors annually. However, its charm is often affected by its challenging accessibility.
Things are now all set to change with the revival of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport. Located approximately 45 kilometers from Amalfi and 21 kilometers from Salerno, the airport will resume commercial operations from July 2024. Not many know but this airport was originally built in 1926 and it has served various roles - including as a military air base and private facility.
It has also briefly operated as a commercial hub between 2007 and 2016. But now, this relaunch will be a fresh chapter. Initially, the airport will have flights to destinations such as Nantes in France and Cagliari in Sardinia starting in July.
Additional routes to Verona and Catania will also be added in September. The initial operations will be led by a Spanish airline. By the year 2043, the airport will be able to handle six million passengers annually.
This will help get rid of congestion at Naples International Airport, which welcomed 12.4 million passengers last year. As of now, this is the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast.
To reach the Amalfi Coast, visitors take a taxi directly from Naples or some even prefer taking a train to Sorrento. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Travel News, Travel.
