Tuesday, January 21, 2025 Italian Authorities Designate Popular Holiday Spot as ‘Red Zone’ Amid Rising Crime Rates. The Italian city of Pisa, renowned for its iconic Leaning Tower, has implemented a ‘red zone’ to address escalating crime rates. The Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety (Cosp) revealed that the zone would be established near the railway station, a bustling hub often visited by international tourists.

Pisa officials highlighted that the city’s airport ranks as Tuscany’s second busiest station, accommodating approximately 20 million travelers annually, with peak activity occurring between 7 am and 6 pm. The ‘red zone’ designation marks an urban area deemed high-risk for criminal activity, where individuals displaying aggressive or threatening behavior may face parking restrictions or be ordered to vacate the area. Pisa, celebrated worldwide for its historic landmarks, has also gained notoriety as a hotspot for pickpocketing.

The city’s iconic attractions draw millions of visitors each year, making the bustling tourist zones a magnet for opportunistic thieves. To enhance safety and protect public spaces, authorities have introduced new measures. These efforts build on earlier initiatives, including the installation of advanced lighting systems and expanded video surveillance networks, aimed at creating a more secure environment for residents and tourists alike.

The designated ‘red zone’ encompasses Piazza della Stazione, Via Masca.
