It comes after a massive wildfire prompted the evacuation of 1,000 tourists from a camping village in Puglia on Wednesday (July 24).



The situation in southern Italy has been deemed as "critical" by Giuseppe Nobiletti, mayor of Vieste, speaking to Italian media outlets. The blaze ignited in the forest above San Felice Bay, just south of Vieste. Battling the fire has proven challenging due to its location in rugged terrain and the strong winds fuelling it.

The Baia dei Campi accommodation facility was evacuated as a precaution. Further evacuations and road closures may be imminent as the fire continues to rage, potentially disrupting more communities and causing traffic delays even after evacuation orders are lifted, reports Birmingham Live . Human activity, whether accidental or deliberate, has been identified as the main cause of the majority of Italy's forest fires in recent years.

This summer's fires, exacerbated by a European heatwave , have ravaged over 10,000 hectares of land, with nearly 8,400 hectares destroyed in the past month alone, Coldiretti, Italy's leading agricultural association, reports. Two brave firefighters tragically lost their lives last week in a heroic attempt to rescue a family from their home, dangerously close to a raging fire near Matera in Basilicata, southern Italy. Approximately 1,200 individuals from the affected area are currently being relocated to an emergency shelter in Vieste via both road and sea transport.
