Saturday, August 31, 2024 Discover Ischia, the heavenly Italian island offering travelers serene escapes, stunning beaches, and a touch of quiet luxury. Ischia, a hidden gem in Italy, often goes unnoticed due to its more famous and flamboyant neighbor, Capri. However, this volcanic island, nestled in the Gulf of Naples, is beginning to shine in its own right.

Known for its rejuvenating thermal springs, stunning sandy beaches, and a rich history of wine production, Ischia offers a more spacious and less crowded alternative to Capri, allowing visitors to enjoy its charms without the hustle of tourist crowds. The island is composed of six distinct towns, each offering a unique experience. Visitors can easily spend days exploring its various attractions.

From hiking through vineyards to soaking in mineral-rich thermal waters, savoring fresh seafood, and relaxing in gardens associated with famous British composers, Ischia promises a multitude of activities for every traveler. One of the island’s highlights is its thermal parks, particularly Poseidon in Forio d’Ischia. The largest on the island, Poseidon boasts 20 pools, many filled with healing thermal spring water.

With private access to a sandy beach, the park offers a luxurious spa-like experience, enhanced by its beautifully landscaped terraces and the stunning backdrop of the Bay of Citara. Here, guests can enjoy a variety of pools, including a brisk 15°C plunge pool and a soothing 40°C pool designed to improve circulation. Adult day passes cost around £37 in the high season, with afternoon passes priced at £33.

After indulging in relaxation, visitors should sample the local wines and take in the island’s scenic beauty. A visit to Antonio Mazzella Cellars, a family-owned vineyard on the island’s southern hills, is highly recommended. The vineyard offers breathtaking views and an opportunity to appreciate the family’s dedication to overcoming challenges since 1940 to produce their award-winning wines.

The wines are hand-harvested and pressed in small caves carved into the rock, with the must transported to the sea in specially designed containers. The fresh, high-acidity Biancolella wine is a must-try, with tasting sessions and bottles available for purchase at reasonable prices. Ischia is also a paradise for seafood and pizza enthusiasts.

At Un Attimo Di Vino, located on La Riva Destra in Ischia Porto, diners can enjoy fresh fish dishes, including a sophisticated take on fish and chips. Another notable spot is Rena, a beachside bar and restaurant on Maronti Beach, where guests can enjoy raw prawn dishes amidst vibrant beach party vibes. For pizza lovers, Ristorante Pizzeria Da Ciccio on the island’s west coast offers delicious margherita pizzas made with high-quality ingredients.

Nearby, the ancient Castello Aragonese, perched on a small tidal island connected to Ischia, provides a historic backdrop to the dining experience. No visit to Ischia is complete without trying its signature rabbit dishes. After a spectacular sunset aperitivo at the Punta Imperatore Lighthouse hotel, guests can indulge in a mouthwatering rabbit pasta dish.

The hotel, with its four rooms, offers a romantic setting with breathtaking sea views. Ischia’s natural beauty is complemented by its serene gardens. Giardini Ravino, the largest European collection of succulent plants, is a tranquil retreat featuring art installations and giant lemons.

Visitors can enjoy a refreshing cactus cocktail at the garden’s café or stay overnight at the charming Villa Ravino. Another garden worth visiting is Giardini La Mortella, the former home of British composer Sir William Walton. Designed by Walton’s wife Susana and landscape architect Russell Page, these gardens blend global influences and provide a cultural haven with summer concerts in the outdoor Greek Theatre.

For budget-conscious travelers, the Casa Di Meglio hotel offers a comfortable stay with a terrace overlooking the north coast’s sea views. Ischia is a place where the love for good food, wine, and relaxation is evident in every experience. Escaping to this unpretentious Italian island is truly the stuff of holiday dreams.
