She's such an all-rounder sportsperson - from rugby to Gaelic to camogie and she would have been a big star in the future.” Clodagh Phelan died after a fall while on holiday in Mallorca Club Mac hotel in Puerto de Alcudia An 11-year-old Irish girl who died after falling from the seventh floor of a Spanish hotel where she was staying with her family has been described as a “beautiful, spirited child”.

The young girl has been named locally as Clodagh Phelan from Co.= Wicklow. She was a talented sports person, who excelled at GAA, rugby and athletics.



Clodagh was a much cherished member of Parnell Athletic Club based in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow. Coaches, athletes, and everyone associated with the club have been trying to come to terms with Clodagh’s tragic passing. Local police are investigating the circumstances of the death, which is believed to have been a tragic accident.

It happened around 6.30am this morning at the Club Mac hotel in the family resort of Puerto de Alcudia in the north-east of Mallorca. Club Mac hotel in Puerto de Alcudia Paramedics and other emergency responders tried to revive Clodagh, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem investigation is expected to take place today, she is understood to have fallen 65ft. It is understood the family were planning to return home later today. Chairperson of Parnell Athletic Club and Wicklow Athletic Society Bill Porter said Clodagh had a “lovely personality” and was “loved by everybody so much”.

He said Clodagh had been involved in the club from a young age, along with her father. "It's just a tragedy. She's such an all-rounder sportsperson - from rugby to Gaelic to camogie and she would have been a big star in the future.

“It's a devastating blow to our club, all our friends, all the schools, and to her family. “Everyone's on the phones all day today, and it's really hard to get our heads around it, it's going to take a while for it to sink in. “She’s only 11 years of age and she was loved by everybody so much.

She was lovely, she had such a great smile and such a lovely personality. “Condolences to the family and all our club colleagues. She will be sadly missed by all our club,” he added.

A civil Guard spokesman in Majorca confirmed: “We are investigating the death of an 11-year-old Irish girl who died after plunging from a seventh-floor terrace at a hotel in Alcudia. “The first emergency calls came in around 6.45 this morning.

” Meanwhile local police in Alcudia, who are employed by the town hall and were among the first on the scene, said in a statement: "Around 6.45 this morning an alert was received saying a person had fallen from the balcony of their apartment on the Mac Hotels hotel complex. "Immediately officers from this police unit as well as the Civil Guard and paramedics went to the scene.

"Once they were there they discovered an 11-year-old Irish girl who was already dead. "We wish to send our condolences to the family of this young girl. Rest in peace.

" The incident happened at Club Mac, an all-inclusive three-star resort that specialises in family holidays. In a moving tribute posted online, Parnell Athletic Club stated: “Parnell A.C.

are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes. “Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics. Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice.” In April Clodagh was part of the Rathdrum Rugby Club’s U-12 girls team who played at halftime during the Ireland versus Wales women’s Six Nations clash in Virgin Media Park, where Clodagh made her presence felt by being selected player of the match by a panel of Munster rugby staff. A regional emergency co-ordination centre has offered trauma counselling to her family.

A receptionist at Club Mac said this morning the resort was not commenting. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. “As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases,” a spokesperson said.
