Thursday, August 15, 2024 ICAO boosts African aviation with key partnerships, driving sustainable development, safety, and compliance through new capacity-building agreements. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has taken a decisive step to bolster aviation’s contribution to sustainable development across Africa. During the AFI Week in Gabon, ICAO entered into four critical capacity-building and implementation support agreements with Member States, each designed to enhance their aviation sectors and ensure compliance with international standards.
Gabon’s Agence Nationale de l’Aviation Civile has signed a comprehensive Management Service Agreement (MSA) with ICAO. This agreement grants Gabon access to ICAO’s expertise, project management, procurement services, and tailored training programs. A central element of this partnership is the potential creation of a Civil Aviation Master Plan, which will guide the strategic development of Gabon’s aviation infrastructure and services, focusing on efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
Chad’s Autorité de l’Aviation Civile has collaborated with ICAO for an initial assessment of its training needs. This essential project will review the technical and general competencies of ADAC staff responsible for civil aviation safety and security oversight. By optimizing human resources, Chad aims to significantly improve the operational effectiveness of its civil aviation authority.
Uganda’s Civil Aviation Authority and ICAO have agreed to establish a comprehensive 15-year Air Navigation Plan. This strategic framework will direct the implementation of air navigation services and infrastructure in Uganda, ensuring alignment with global aviation standards. The plan aims to create a safer, more efficient, and higher-capacity air navigation system for the country.
South Africa’s Civil Aviation Authority has signed a Declaration of Intent to host the upcoming Global Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Summit in February 2025 in Johannesburg. This event underscores South Africa’s dedication to cultivating the next generation of aviation industry leaders. These agreements underscore ICAO’s commitment to supporting African Member States in developing sustainable aviation sectors.
