It has taken in more than €6.2m here, while global sales of over €1.5bn have already made it the highest-grossing animated picture of all time.



According to industry experts, it is now all but certain that the coming-of-age film will be the best-performing movie of 2024, in what is proving to be a lucrative year for the cinema industry. Last year, box-office receipts topped €100m for the first time in four years, as Barbie pulled in over €9.9m in Ireland to become the biggest box-office hit of all time in this country.

Industry watchdogs have predicted that a string of upcoming releases — including Gladiator II in November, with Irish star Paul Mescal — will help secure another bumper year for the big screen. Cassandra Joyce, group sales director at Pearl & Dean Ireland, said: “2024 has been the year of family blockbusters, with five of the top 10 movies so far this year being family releases.
